Let me explain.
Our Milsey is a big baby. She is exclusively breast fed (ebf) and at last weigh in at 16 weeks was a solid 16lb 2oz, but she is also a very advanced baby. For the past few weeks we have noticed that she is more and more interested in our food; she watches with amazement as we raise our forks to our mouths and the food dissappears! She has great hand eye coordination and so is able to accurately reach out and grab her toys and put them in her mouth for a rigorous chew! All this to say, we have been starting to think she's properly on her way to being ready for solids.
I, like many of you, struggle to make any decisions without copious googling so have spent the past few days reading up on baby led weaning (blw) a concept a good friend introduced me to and a great idea I came across to fend off curious fingers from mummy's plate was to give baby their own spoon/plate/bowl to play with at the table. I thought this would be fun and I was already thinking I wanted Millie at the table with us more and more to get into the habit of sociable eating.
So at dinner tonight we propped her up on my lap (she has a very strong core so can almost sit unaided making this fairly easy) and handed her a plastic spoon. Amazingly, my little 19 week old proceeded to tap the handle of the spoon on my plate and suck the end (the other end... She's not quite got the hang of it yet!) and back and forth she went; tap suck, tap suck all meal through as if she were scooping up food and eating it!
It was amazing, and VERY CUTE to watch, I can't wait to try again today and see if she does the same!
It seems to be a great way to hold her off from actually eating food while still overcoming the daily struggle of her wanting to be included in mealtimes. Long may it last!
Next step for us is to get a high hair and get her used to sitting in it at the table with us.
